(I have been waffling about whether I should call it soccer or football, but I have decided that I am Australian and I will use the Australian word for it. Haters to the left.)

Last night I went to see Argentina vs Germany in 3D at the cinema, in one of the quarter finals for this world cup.

The match
It was a good match! I was barracking for Germany, but I'd say the cinema was about 3/4 pro Argentina (or maybe a little more; it's hard to judge just by noise). It started out well, with Germany getting a goal 3 minutes into the match, which was good for my stress levels. (Although at times it was still very stressful, I don't know that watching sport is very good for me...)

After that there was nothing for the rest of the first half, with an Argentinean goal not being awarded because they were offside. Manuel Neuer, the German goalkeeper, was very good and stopped quite a lot of goals; he had to do a lot more than the Argentinean goalkeeper, but he did it a lot better, too.

The second half started slowly, then at 69 minutes Germany got another goal; Argentina was a bit stressed but they were still potentially in the game until Germany got another goal at 74 minutes, and then as a finishing touch got another at 89 minutes.

Overall, the Argentineans seems to have it more together midfield (the Germans kept kicking the ball to the Argentineans, who never did the same to the Germans), but could not manage to score.

It was a very interesting game, which was well matched through much of the play and with a lot of shots at goal. And then Germany won! I enjoyed it a lot.

Random highlights
A German midfielder called Bastian Schweinsteiger (a totally sweet name) was very active on the field and at one stage did a sweet sort of pirouette/turn thing and with his leg sticking straight out from his hip swung it around to kick the ball back down the field behind him. Hard to describe but cool to watch.
Friedrich did a backflip after his goal, which was fun.

Watching Argentinean player Messi move the ball around was very impressive, if nerve wracking when he was near the goal.

3D
As for it being in 3D, I liked it overall. It was a little harder to focus on than normal tv, although possibly part of that was that I wore my contacts (due to the 3D glasses) which require more work than wearing my glasses. But the technology does have some room for improvement; it doesn't do objects that are out of focus as well as objects in focus.

I found that for me it had novelty value for the crowd scenes, was very good for the further out shots of the field and the closeups, and was annoying for midfield midrange shots, because it was hard to work out where they were in relation to the rest of the field.

Overall, I found it quite enjoyable and would happily go again and also recommend it to others, although I would still be quite happy to watch 2D film and tv.

I wonder if they will also be broadcasting the AFL and rugby finals in 3D in the near future, or if the rights agreements they have in place will prevent it?
