Tonight I watched a documentary about some of the history of military submarines, which was mostly US based. The first submarine covered was a bit of a failure - it was basically a wooden sphere/egg type of thing, manually propelled by the operator, and only had the air from its internal space to breath in (about half an hour or so). It also failed to blow anything up.

I particularly enjoyed the little mini science demonstrations they got some scientists to do through the program, because clearly the scientists were so very excited to be sharing the wonders of SCIENCE. They were all 'look, oxygen from water! Look at it set this taper on fire! TOTALLY COOL.' and 'Check it out, water boiling at room temperature because I lowered the pressure!'1 and then some other scientists were all 'raising and lowering submarines using only air is pretty pants, really. *loses control of model submarine, which sinks*' and then 'mini torpedo launching system: works better with air in the tube', which involved a lot of glee faces as little mini torpedos were launched in the NAME OF SCIENCE.

1Submarines, it turns out, make a lot of noise from their propellers, which generate partial vacuums as they turn; this in turn makes the seawater around them boil, turning to steam, and then the noise of all the little steam bubbles popping is very loud. Submarines are designed to reduce this propeller noise and it is all very top secret.

And then I watched Iron Chef and ate garlic toast, and it was an extra time battle due to a draw which then was a draw itself, so it was 'you are both winners!' time.

I also caught the news on ABC and SBS as I was flicking around looking for something to watch, and so got the match coverage of Melbourne Victory vs Brisbane Roar, which was a pretty awesome match. The first goal was an own goal by Melbourne Victory, then the next was from Roar, and then with 13 minutes to go Victory got the first of three goals, and right before then end looked like they would win 3-2 when suddenly in injury time the Roar goalkeeper caught the ball outside his area, which the referee didn't notice, and then from that the ball was played up the field and Roar got a goal.

Sadly Melbourne Victory Women didn't do as well, losing 4-1 to Roar. Canberra and Adelaide got washed out, due to an amazing amount of rain.
